twelve.

Nora and I looked at one another. Why would anyone bother to knock? There wasn’t anything we could do to let them in since the doors were locked. All they had to do was just walk right in.

I could hear the doorknob being twisted and then the bottom of the door brushing against the tiled floor as it was pushed open. Maybe someone was bringing our food, but it wouldn’t have fit the schedule.

When I saw the man dressed all in black, I blinked several times before I realized it was Father Erik. He looked different up close and in our room.

He was shorter and slimmer than I had thought. When he was up on stage his presence must have made him seem bigger than he actually was.

Father Erik looked at me with eyes that glowed like blue tinted diamonds. He tilted his head down slightly and raised the corner of his mouth.

“Hello girls,” he said folding his hands in front of his stomach.

“Hi,” Nora and I both said at almost the same time.

He smiled at her and then turned his head so he could show me the same fake smile. “You both look like you are doing well.”

I scooted myself back into a seated position as he moved closer to my bed. For some reason it felt strange reclining in his presence. He rested his hand on the rail at the foot of my bed.

Even though he was about two feet away from me, it still felt like he was too close. I hated the way he looked at me. It made me shiver and my insides tighten.

I don’t know what it was, but it felt like snakes had climbed out of his pockets and were slithering across my bed. They were trying to find their way up my body and into my brain so they could discover what I was thinking.

I felt it so strongly I looked down at the sheets to make sure it was just my imagination. He smirked at me as though he could read my mind, but of course he couldn't. It was more likely I was giving away too much with my body language.

“You’re probably wondering what I’m doing here.” His eyes firmly locked with mine.

I nodded and I was pretty sure I saw Nora’s head bobbing out of the corner of my eye. When he was this close to me, it was as though I could feel his hypnotic powers radiating from his whole body. But thankfully I was still able to keep my shield up and push it away.

Father Erik cleared his throat, “Once a week I try to make a special visit with all our new friends. I like to check in with them and make sure everything is going well, or if there is something I can help with as far as the transition from the outside world to our wonderful community is concerned. As you both know, it’s not easy out there. It can come as quite a shock when you come in here and you are no longer struggling.
